Pregnancy symptoms you shouldn’t ignore

There are several symptoms that a pregnant woman should never ignore, as it is detrimental to the health of both mum and baby.

Apart from stress, there are six symptoms that should be taken seriously.

If you experience any of the symptoms below:

1. Bleeding
This may be indicative of miscarriage, an ectopic pregnancy (if pain is also experienced) or placental abruption (which is the separation of the placenta from the uterine lining).

2. Fever
If you have a temperature above 37,5 degrees celcius and do not experience cold or flu symptoms, you could have an infection. If your temperature stays above 39 degrees celcius, it could be harmful to the baby.

3. Increased thirst with little urination
This could indicate gestational diabetes, which is also very serious for both mother and baby.

4. Abdominal pain, headache, vision problems, swollen hands and face
This could be a signal of preeclampsia which is a protein and blood pressure condition that is dangerous for baby and mum.

5. Leaking fluid
This could occur when your membranes are ruptured, leaving you at risk for infection.

6. Itchiness all over with dark urine and pale stool
This could be symptoms of an underlying liver problem like hepatitis or obstetric cholestasis and can cause further complications such as foetal distress, premature birth and potentially even stillbirth.
